What is block printing?

Block printing is a traditional technique where carved wooden blocks are used to hand-print designs onto fabric or paper using natural or chemical dyes.

Unlike digital printing, block printing is completely handcrafted, giving each piece a unique, artisanal touch with slight variations that add to its beauty.

Common fabrics include cotton, linen, silk, and wool, though natural fabrics absorb dyes best for vibrant prints.

Some popular styles include Bagru, Sanganeri, Dabu (mud resist printing), and Ajrak, each with distinct patterns and techniques.

Traditional block printing uses natural dyes derived from plants, minerals, and organic sources, though synthetic dyes are also sometimes used.

The process varies, but hand-block printing can take several hours to days, depending on the complexity of the design and the number of layers/colors.

Absolutely! While cotton is the most common fabric, silk, wool, and other natural textiles can also be block printed beautifully.
